I agree that Top Management is the number one factor associated with the success of a project. Without adequate resources, time and cohesiveness provided by top management, the rest of the project will be unable to continue. Top Management also provides the motivation to the other teams that encourages them to work hard. Actually, “the involvement of top managers in the process of new product development is seen as one of the most important factors for its success. An organization’s group of managers with official authority can make decisions that affect the process or can even get involved directly. Indeed, several studies showed that top managers’ support for the project boosted its performance in terms of financial success, timely execution and design quality.” I have been apart of many projects in my career and the lack of top management’s involvement never resulted in success. The more involved, the smoother it went because it provided direction and resources. In my current position, we are implementing an entirely new product and facility for manufacturing a cancer therapy. Something as small as a lack of supplies can halt the entire process. Top management is involved in every decision and workflow that is imperative to being able to move forward. I have been a part of two successful Epic (electronic health record system) implementations that were focused on preparation and project timelines at a corporate level. There were some bumps particularly in biting off more then they could chew but they were able to work it out with input from all the leaders. During the go live day, all the managers were present for all shifts to assist and there were multiple trainings leading up to the day. On the opposite side, I remember the Coast Guard’s $67 million dollar failed Epic implementation. The main reason for failure was lack of top management. “Without any active, effective management oversight, the project leads were allowed to increase their wishes and desires without check. For example, the project was originally envisioned and sold as an EHR modernization effort based on that would begin deployment to the Coast Guard’s 41 clinics and 125 sick bays sometime in late 2011. It soon morphed into a ” .” Without clear leadership, there weren’t clear boundaries, and a projects success relies on involved planning.
