Use your creative mind think of a tool of the future based on CI that would support your disciplinary practice. Apply Your Knowledge Two occupational therapist assistants, Mary, age 23, and Ann, age 48, are working together in a rehabilitation unit of a local hospital. The hospital has recently merged with a larger medical system and has initiated computer-based critical pathways as a progressive phase toward an expanded interdisciplinary electronic health record to be used with the planned patient smart rooms. All professionals on the rehabilitation unit have received training with the mobile device application-a critical pathway decision-making and documentation system-and the administration is planning a mock go-live on the rehabilitation unit today. All professionals on the unit are carrying mobile devices to be used for patient assessment and documentation. Mary is excited about the mock go-live. She immediately begins working with her mobile device when completing her clinical assessments. Ann feels increasingly anxious as the morning progresses. Even though she has access to paper-based crosswalks of clinical documentation available in each patient room and at the nurse’s station to guide her with documentation, Ann is having a difficult time concentrating and realizes she is getting behind in her patient care. During break, Mary is anxious to discuss the changes and the efficiency with which she can complete her patient care interventions and her documentation. She does not have a chance to say anything because Ann immediately begins complaining about her day. Ann is angry and complains bitterly about the lack of caring for patients by administration and the diverting of much-needed patient care funds to technology-focused purchases that have nothing to do with patients. She continues to complain about her lack of desire to learn all of this new technology At the end of the day, Mary goes home and tells her significant other that she may start looking for a new job outside of the hospital. The negativity in her work environment and the aversion to change is difficult to deal with on At the end of the day, Ann goes home late from work after finally completing her work and tells her significant other that she may get out of health care. “Health care is not what it used to be,” she explains. “Nobody cares about the patient.” Discuss and reflect on the following information from Chapters 1 to 4: ongoing basis 1. Mary and Ann represent two different generations. Identify the generation that each represents and discuss how this influences each professional’s reaction to the introduction of technology/computers in patient care 2. Describe the implications for practice in this setting, based on the reactions of both individuals. (Think about how technology may disrupt the typical clinical experience trajectory for these therapists) 3. Discuss this scenario in relation to informatics competencies and CL 4. If you were in this situation as Mary or Ann, what recommendations would you have for the administrators in an attempt to retain you and increase your satisfaction in the current work setting?
