DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Once you choose a research method for your dissertation, you should learn everything you can about it. This includes reading several studies that employ this method to understand how it is used. The next step is to determine how you will collect the data and how you will analyze it. How you analyze your data is often stipulated by the research method you chose. If you chose a quantitative method, you will use statistics (e.g., MANOVA, logistical regression, etc.) to analyze your data. The statistics you use will depend on the type of data (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio) and number of variables in your study. If you chose a qualitative method, your analysis may consist of organizing descriptive information into a story, creating concepts, or identifying themes.

WEEKLY RESOURCES
BY DAY 4
Post a brief description of the research method and data collection method you plan to use for your dissertation. Then describe the specific type of analysis you may use (ANOVA, MANOVA, SEM, concept analysis, etc.) to analyze your data and explain why. Be specific.Include the relevant information from your discussion in the Nature of the Study and/or Research Design Alignment Table in the Prospectus Form.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.
BY DAY 7
Respond to your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:

Suggest an alternative research method and data collection method.
Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
Validate an idea with your own experience.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.

QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS
Theoretically, you can use either a qualitative or a quantitative method to conduct nearly any type of research. For example, suppose you are interested in studying leadership. You may narrow this area to studying the impact of leadership challenges on the problem-solving methods used by a particular group of leaders, such as CEOs. In this case, you could develop an Internet survey to collect information regarding which problem-solving methods leaders most often use when they encounter specific challenges.
Perhaps you are more interested in how leaders experience challenges and why they choose particular problem-solving methods in response to particular challenges. In this case, you may use a qualitative method, like case study, to focus on one or two individuals in leadership roles and gather descriptive information through conducting open-ended interviews about how they experience challenges and choose problem-solving methods. There are reliability and validity issues that arise whether you use quantitative or qualitative research methods.
To prepare for this Discussion, think about which research method will best answer your research question while minimizing threats to both reliability and validity.
