Closing the knowledge gap is indeed a crucial skill for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) practice scholar. As a DNP student, my application of evidence-based practice (EBP) and professional formation has helped me in improving patient outcomes and delivering high-quality care. This paper aims to reflect upon my experience and discuss the importance of these skills in bridging the knowledge gap in healthcare.

EBP plays a vital role in closing the knowledge gap by promoting the use of current and best available evidence in clinical decision-making. EBP ensures that healthcare professionals are using the most up-to-date research findings to inform their practice. By utilizing evidence, practitioners can provide safe and effective care, ultimately improving patient outcomes. According to Melnyk et al. (2020), EBP is essential for advancing the science of nursing and addressing complex healthcare challenges. Additionally, EBP fosters a culture of inquiry and continuous improvement, allowing healthcare professionals to critically evaluate their practice and implement evidence-based interventions. This ability to critically appraise and apply evidence is fundamental for the DNP practice scholar in order to effectively close the knowledge gap.

Furthermore, professional formation is another critical aspect of the DNP practice scholar’s role in closing the knowledge gap. Professional formation encompasses the development of leadership, advocacy, and ethical decision-making skills. As a DNP student, I have actively engaged in activities that promote professional formation, such as attending conferences, participating in professional organizations, and taking on leadership roles within my clinical setting. These experiences have allowed me to learn from other healthcare professionals, expand my knowledge, and develop the skills necessary to bridge the knowledge gap. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2021), professional formation is a fundamental component of the DNP curriculum, as it prepares graduates to influence healthcare policy, advocate for patients, and lead interprofessional teams. By honing these skills, DNP practice scholars can contribute to closing the knowledge gap by implementing evidence-based practices and influencing change at both the individual and system level.

In conclusion, closing the knowledge gap is an essential skill for the DNP practice scholar. EBP and professional formation are integral components of this process, as they facilitate the use of current evidence and the development of leadership and advocacy skills. By applying evidence-based practice and engaging in professional formation activities, DNP students and practitioners can bridge the knowledge gap and ensure the delivery of high-quality care. Moving forward, it is crucial for DNP programs to continue emphasizing these skills and creating opportunities for students to develop and apply them in their practice.
