Course Competency 1: Understand the principles and theories of nursing practice.
Throughout this course, I achieved the competency of understanding the principles and theories of nursing practice by actively engaging in the readings, participating in class discussions, and conducting independent research.
One example of new knowledge I gained related to this competency was understanding the importance of evidence-based practice in nursing. Prior to taking this course, I had a basic understanding of evidence-based practice but lacked a deeper understanding of its significance in nursing. Through reading peer-reviewed articles, participating in class discussions on evidence-based practice, and engaging in group projects that required the application of evidence-based practice principles, I gained a comprehensive understanding of how evidence-based practice can improve patient outcomes and guide nursing interventions.
Course Competency 2: Apply nursing theories and frameworks to guide practice.
To achieve the competency of applying nursing theories and frameworks to guide practice, I actively engaged in discussions and case studies that required the application of nursing theories and frameworks in various clinical scenarios.
One example of new knowledge I gained related to this competency was learning about the different nursing theories and their practical application in clinical practice. Prior to this course, I was familiar with certain nursing theories, such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Jean Watson’s theory of human caring. However, through this course, I was introduced to a wider range of nursing theories, including Orem’s self-care deficit theory and Leininger’s transcultural nursing theory. I gained a deeper understanding of how these theories can guide nursing practice and provide a framework for holistic patient care.
Course Competency 3: Incorporate ethical, legal, and professional standards into nursing practice.
Throughout this course, I developed the competency of incorporating ethical, legal, and professional standards into nursing practice by critically examining case studies, participating in ethical discussions, and engaging in self-reflection.
One example of new knowledge I gained related to this competency was understanding the ethical principles that guide nursing practice, such as autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. I also learned about the importance of ethical decision-making frameworks, such as the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and the ethical principles outlined in the Belmont Report. This new knowledge has provided me with a solid foundation for making ethically sound decisions in my nursing practice and advocating for the rights and well-being of my patients.
Transferable Skill: Critical Thinking
Throughout this course, I further developed the transferable skill of critical thinking through analyzing complex nursing scenarios, evaluating research evidence, and participating in collaborative group discussions.
One example of new knowledge I gained related to critical thinking was improving my ability to analyze research articles and evaluate the strength of evidence presented. Through class assignments and group projects, I refined my skills in critically appraising research studies, identifying biases, and determining the applicability of research findings to nursing practice. This new knowledge has enhanced my ability to make informed decisions based on the best available evidence and has strengthened my critical thinking skills.
The new knowledge I have gained through this course will have a significant impact on my nursing practice. Understanding the principles and theories of nursing practice will allow me to provide holistic and evidence-based care to my patients. By applying nursing theories and frameworks, I can guide and improve my practice, leading to better outcomes for my patients. Incorporating ethical, legal, and professional standards into my nursing practice ensures that I uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics. Furthermore, developing my critical thinking skills will enable me to analyze complex situations and make well-informed decisions for the benefit of my patients.
