Introduction

American Sign Language (ASL) is a unique language system used by the Deaf community in the United States. Through our ASL experience, our group sought to enhance our understanding of the Deaf culture, language, and communication methods. In this reflection paper, we will discuss the benefits and barriers to evidence-based nursing practice, with a focus on two course objectives – objective 1.3: explore available resources for evidence-based practice in nursing, and objective 1.5: determine the benefits and barriers to evidence-based nursing practice.

Objective 1.3: Explore available resources for evidence-based practice in nursing

One of the objectives we chose to focus on during our ASL experience was to explore available resources for evidence-based practice in nursing. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is crucial in providing the most effective and efficient care to patients. Identifying and utilizing high-quality resources is essential for nurses to make informed clinical decisions.

During our ASL experience, we discovered several resources that can support evidence-based nursing practice. These resources include peer-reviewed journals, databases, and practice guidelines. Peer-reviewed journals allow nurses to access research studies that have undergone a rigorous review process by experts in the field. These studies provide an evidence base for nursing interventions and allow nurses to stay updated with the latest research findings. Databases, such as PubMed and CINAHL, serve as comprehensive platforms for accessing a wide range of literature on various nursing topics. Moreover, practice guidelines, such as those provided by professional organizations like the American Nurses Association (ANA), offer evidence-based recommendations for specific clinical situations.

However, despite the availability of these resources, there are barriers that may hinder nurses from accessing and utilizing them. One such barrier is the lack of time. Nurses often find themselves overwhelmed with their clinical responsibilities, leaving little time for literature research and evidence appraisal. Additionally, the complexity of research articles and the use of technical terminology may pose challenges for nurses who are not familiar with the research process. Limited access to subscription-based journals may also limit nurses’ ability to retrieve relevant information. Overcoming these barriers requires organizational support, such as allocating dedicated time for literature review and providing access to a range of research resources.

Objective 1.5: Determine the benefits and barriers to evidence-based nursing practice

The second objective we focused on was determining the benefits and barriers to evidence-based nursing practice. While EBP has numerous advantages, it is not without its challenges.

One significant benefit of evidence-based nursing practice is improved patient outcomes. By basing their clinical decisions on high-quality evidence, nurses can provide care that is more effective, efficient, and safe. EBP enhances patient safety by reducing the potential for errors and adverse events. It also promotes consistency in care delivery, ensuring that patients receive the same level of evidence-based treatment regardless of the healthcare setting.

Moreover, evidence-based nursing practice contributes to professional growth and development. Engaging with research and staying updated with the latest evidence allows nurses to expand their knowledge base and refine their clinical skills. It empowers nurses to critically evaluate the literature and integrate best practices into their care.

Despite these benefits, there are barriers to implementing evidence-based nursing practice. One major barrier is the resistance to change. Traditionally, healthcare practices have been rooted in clinical experience and expert opinions, with little emphasis on research evidence. Shifting towards evidence-based practice requires a cultural change and a willingness to challenge traditional practices. Moreover, limited resources, such as time and funding, can hinder the integration of EBP into nursing practice. Additional barriers include a lack of confidence in research appraisal skills and the presence of conflicting evidence, which may create uncertainty among nurses. Overcoming these barriers requires a supportive organizational culture that values research and provides resources and education to facilitate evidence-based practice.

Conclusion

Our ASL experience allowed us to reflect on the benefits and barriers of evidence-based nursing practice. We learned about valuable resources for EBP and recognized the challenges that nurses may face in accessing and utilizing them. By recognizing and addressing these barriers, nurses can enhance the quality of care provided to patients and contribute to ongoing improvements in healthcare delivery.
