1) The stage of racial identity formation that best describes where I am right now is the stage of Encounter. According to racial identity theories proposed by researchers such as William Cross and Janet Helms, the Encounter stage is characterized by heightened awareness of racial and ethnic differences and a sense of personal involvement in confronting these issues (Cross, 1991; Helms, 1995).
2) Among the stages described in the chapter on racial identity formation, the Encounter stage encompasses my current state of mind most accurately. It reflects my heightened awareness and personal engagement with the complexities of racial identity. At this stage, individuals often experience a sense of confusion, conflict, and dissonance as they encounter the reality of racial inequality and discrimination in their daily lives. This stage encourages a critical examination of one’s own beliefs, biases, and privileges, and an openness to learning from diverse perspectives.
3) To arrive at the stage of Encounter, I have undergone a process of development and growth in my understanding of racial identity. This journey has been shaped by various factors, such as personal experiences, exposure to different viewpoints, education, and self-reflection. Initially, during the Pre-Encounter stage, I held a limited awareness of racial issues and may have been unaware of my own prejudices or biases. However, as I gained exposure to diverse perspectives and became more conscious of social injustice, an internal shift occurred, leading me to question my assumptions and engage in critical self-reflection.
Over time, I began to recognize the importance of confronting my own biases and working towards dismantling systemic racism. This transformative process led to the Immersion/Emersion stage, where I actively sought out opportunities to learn about racial identity and engage in discussions about race and inequality. Through dialogue, reflection, and education, I deepened my understanding of the complex intersections of race, ethnicity, and social power dynamics.
The Achievement stage followed, where I began to demonstrate increased confidence and competence in discussing and challenging racial discrimination and inequality. I actively sought out opportunities to advocate for racial justice and became more comfortable engaging in difficult conversations about race with others. This stage involved developing a more nuanced understanding of the lived experiences of individuals from different racial and ethnic backgrounds and recognizing the structural and institutional factors that contribute to systemic racism.
Ultimately, these developmental stages have led me to the Encounter stage, where I am currently situated. However, it is essential to acknowledge that identity development is a lifelong process that may involve regression, reevaluation, and growth. It is possible that I may revisit previous stages or encounter new challenges that require further exploration and understanding.
4) In the future, I aspire to continue my journey of racial identity development by striving for the stage of Internalization or Commitment. This stage signifies a strong sense of one’s racial identity and a commitment to social justice and racial equality. It involves actively integrating anti-racist values and practices into one’s daily life and utilizing one’s privilege to advocate for marginalized communities. This stage also entails recognizing the intersectionality of racial identity and other social identities, such as gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic status, and working towards dismantling multiple forms of oppression. By reaching this stage, I aim to contribute to creating a more equitable society and to continually learn and grow in my understanding of racial identity and social justice.
