Complete this week’s assigned readings, chapters 21 & 22.  After completing the readings, post a short reflection, approximately 1 paragraph in length, discussing your thoughts and opinions about one or several of the specific theories covered in the readings. As a reminder, no scholarly sources are required. You have to read this chapters 21 & 22 of this book: -Nursing Theories and Nursing Practice (Parker, Nursing Theories and Nursing Practice)  Authors: Marlaine Smith PhD RN AHN-BC FAAN; Marilyn E. Parker PhD RN FAAN    Edition: 4

After completing the assigned readings of chapters 21 and 22 from “Nursing Theories and Nursing Practice” by Marlaine Smith and Marilyn Parker, I have gained a deeper understanding of various nursing theories and their applications in nursing practice. One particular theory that stood out to me is the Humanistic Nursing Theory, discussed in chapter 21.

The Humanistic Nursing Theory, rooted in the philosophy of humanism, emphasizes the importance of viewing patients as unique individuals with their own set of values, beliefs, and experiences. It acknowledges the significance of the nurse-patient relationship and the therapeutic presence of the nurse in the healing process. This theory resonates with me as it aligns with my personal values of providing patient-centered care and fostering a therapeutic environment.

According to the Humanistic Nursing Theory, patients are viewed as active participants in their own care, rather than passive recipients. The nurse, in this theory, serves as a facilitator of growth and healing, supporting the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. This approach allows for a holistic understanding of the patient, taking into consideration their unique needs and desires.

One key aspect of the Humanistic Nursing Theory is the concept of presence. Presence refers to the nurse’s ability to be fully engaged and attentive to the patient, both physically and emotionally. This therapeutic presence creates a safe and trusting environment where patients feel comfortable expressing their concerns and collaborating in their care. As a future nurse, I believe that being fully present with my patients will be essential in establishing a therapeutic relationship and promoting their well-being.

Another theory discussed in chapter 22 is the Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory. This theory, developed by Madeleine Leininger, emphasizes the importance of cultural competence in nursing practice. It recognizes that healthcare is influenced by cultural beliefs, values, and practices, and that providing culturally congruent care is crucial for optimal patient outcomes.

The Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory highlights the need for nurses to be knowledgeable and respectful of diverse cultural practices and to incorporate them into the care provided. It promotes the idea of transcultural nursing, which involves understanding and embracing the cultural differences of patients to deliver personalized care that respects their values and beliefs.

I find this theory particularly relevant in today’s multicultural and diverse healthcare settings. As nurses, we must be aware of our own cultural biases and strive to provide care that is sensitive to the individual needs of each patient. By understanding the cultural context of our patients, we can tailor our nursing interventions to be culturally appropriate and enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes.

In conclusion, the readings of chapters 21 and 22 of “Nursing Theories and Nursing Practice” have provided me with valuable insights into the Humanistic Nursing Theory and the Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory. These theories highlight the importance of recognizing patients as unique individuals and respecting their cultural beliefs and values. Incorporating these theories into nursing practice can enhance the nurse-patient relationship, promote patient-centered care, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. I look forward to applying these theories in my future nursing career to provide holistic and culturally congruent care to my patients.
