Throughout the duration of this course on nursing roles, several aspects of my nursing practice have undergone significant changes. One of the major areas of transformation has been in my understanding and appreciation of the various roles that nurses can undertake within the healthcare system. Prior to this course, my perspective was primarily focused on the direct patient care aspect of nursing, as that was the primary role I had been exposed to in my work as a psychiatric nurse. However, the course provided me with a broader view of the profession, highlighting the diverse range of roles that nurses can hold, including leadership, education, research, and policy development.

This expanded awareness has allowed me to recognize the multitude of opportunities available for nurses to make a significant impact on healthcare beyond the bedside. I now appreciate the importance of engaging in ongoing professional development, as it not only enhances individual nursing practice but also contributes to the advancement of the entire profession. By embracing a broader concept of nursing roles, I have started to consider potential future career paths that may involve leadership or research, where I can influence healthcare on a larger scale. This has stimulated my motivation to explore further education and training in these areas, in order to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in these roles.

Another fundamental change in my nursing practice that stems from this course is the increased emphasis on evidence-based practice (EBP) and the utilization of research in decision-making. Prior to the course, while I recognized the importance of EBP in providing optimal care to patients, I often felt overwhelmed by the task of staying up-to-date with the ever-evolving body of knowledge within nursing. However, this course has provided me with a deeper understanding of the role of research in informing nursing practice and has equipped me with the tools to efficiently locate, critically appraise, and apply relevant literature to my clinical practice.

As a result, I have become more confident in integrating research findings into my decision-making process, knowing that this approach enhances the quality of care I provide to my patients. Additionally, I have started to actively seek out opportunities to participate in research projects within my practice setting, with the goal of contributing to the evidence base and bridging the gap between research and practice. This newfound emphasis on EBP has also strengthened my ability to critically evaluate current nursing practices and advocate for changes that are supported by the best available evidence.

In conclusion, my nursing practice as a psychiatric nurse in the hospital setting has evolved significantly as a result of the knowledge gained from this course on nursing roles. I now have a broader understanding of the various roles nurses can undertake and have developed a greater appreciation for the impact that nurses can have on healthcare beyond direct patient care. Additionally, I have embraced the importance of evidence-based practice and research utilization in nursing, leading to a more informed and confident decision-making process. These changes in thinking and practice have provided me with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation in my nursing career, as I strive to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession and provide the highest quality of care to my patients.
