As a bilingual individual, my thorough understanding of a foreign language has decisively shaped my decision to pursue a career in pharmacy. Additionally, it has greatly influenced my experiences throughout pharmacy school, particularly in patient interactions where I have been able to effectively communicate and provide care to individuals who may have language barriers. This essay aims to explore my proficiency in the language and how it has played a significant role in my journey as a pharmacy student.
Having grown up in a bilingual household, I was exposed to both English and Spanish from a young age. By utilizing my Spanish-speaking abilities, I was able to comprehensively understand her concerns, assess her medication regimen, and recognize a potential drug-drug interaction that was causing her adverse effects.
Subsequently, I discussed the issue with the prescribing physician, highlighting the importance of addressing the language barrier and the patient’s struggles with medication management. Together, we worked towards a solution that involved switching the patient to a different medication that would better suit her needs and minimize adverse effects. The patient expressed her immense gratitude for my ability to understand and address her concerns, as well as helping her navigate the healthcare system more effectively.

Had I not been bilingual, this patient’s adverse effects may have persisted, negatively impacting her quality of life and potentially leading to further complications.
