For instance, a community health nurse working in a clinic with a significant immigrant population may ensure that interpretation services are readily available during consultations. This can help overcome language barriers and ensure effective communication between healthcare providers and patients.

Cultural repatterning refers to the process of assisting individuals or communities in adopting new health behaviors that are more compatible with their cultural beliefs and practices. A community health nurse can apply this strategy by developing culturally tailored health education materials. For example, a community health nurse working with a Hispanic community may create educational materials on diabetes management that incorporate culturally relevant food choices and traditional meal preparation methods. This approach acknowledges and respects the cultural traditions of the community while promoting healthier behaviors.

Cultural brokering involves acting as a bridge between different cultures and facilitating communication and negotiation to resolve conflicts or misunderstandings. A community health nurse can apply this strategy by organizing community dialogues or focus groups to address cultural conflicts related to healthcare. For instance, a community health nurse may facilitate a dialogue between healthcare providers and a religious community to address concerns or misunderstandings regarding specific medical procedures or treatments. Cultural brokering can help bridge the gap between different cultural perspectives and promote mutual understanding.

While applying these strategies, community health nurses may face various barriers. One possible barrier to applying the strategy of cultural accommodation, for example, could be a lack of funding or resources to provide adequate language interpretation services. This could impede effective communication and limit access to healthcare for individuals with limited English proficiency. To overcome this barrier, community health nurses can advocate for increased funding and resources for language interpretation services and work with community organizations to find creative solutions.

An evidence-based article that addresses a cultural issue related to community health nursing is “The Impact of Cultural Competence Education on Health Care Provider Cultural Self-Efficacy: Results of a Systematic Review” by Beach et al. This study examines the impact of cultural competence education on healthcare providers’ cultural self-efficacy, as well as on patient outcomes.
