Regarding the remaining competencies, I would like to focus on the competency of providing patient-centered care. Patient-centered care involves tailoring healthcare services to meet the individual needs and preferences of each patient. It emphasizes treating patients as partners in their own care and respecting their values and beliefs (Institute of Medicine, 2001).
Over the years, nursing has made significant changes to achieve the competency of providing patient-centered care. In the past, healthcare professionals would make decisions for patients without fully involving them in the decision-making process. However, nursing has recognized the importance of empowering patients and involving them in their own care.
To achieve patient-centered care, nursing has implemented various strategies. One strategy is the use of shared decision-making models. Shared decision-making recognizes that patients should be active participants in decisions about their health, treatment, and care options. Nurses provide patients with information and help them explore different options, supporting them in making informed choices that align with their personal values and goals (Dyess & Sherman, 2009).
Nursing has also embraced the use of patient advocacy to achieve patient-centered care. Advocacy involves supporting and promoting the rights and interests of patients. Nurses act as advocates by ensuring that patients have access to information, resources, and services necessary for their well-being. This includes advocating for patient autonomy, ensuring that patients are well-informed about their healthcare options, and providing support in navigating the healthcare system (Royal College of Nursing, 2009).
Furthermore, nursing has incorporated the use of patient satisfaction surveys to assess and improve the delivery of patient-centered care. These surveys allow patients to provide feedback on their healthcare experience, including the quality of care received, communication with healthcare providers, and level of involvement in decision-making. The feedback obtained can then be used to identify areas for improvement and make necessary changes to enhance the patient experience (Lake et al., 2019).
