The population I have chosen to assess is Hispanics with diabetes, as this group has been reported to have a high prevalence and increased risk of complications related to diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2019), the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes among Hispanics in the United States is higher compared to non-Hispanic whites. Additionally, Hispanics are more likely to develop complications from diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease (CDC, 2019). This health disparity calls for evidence-based, primary care health promotion recommendations to be developed to address the unique needs of this population.

One evidence-based recommendation to promote health in Hispanics with diabetes is to provide culturally tailored interventions. Cultural factors, such as language, beliefs, and traditions, play a significant role in health behaviors and outcomes for Hispanics. Therefore, it is important to consider these factors when designing interventions. For example, a study by Cherrington et al. (2018) found that a culturally tailored, community health worker-led intervention resulted in improvements in diabetes-related outcomes among Hispanics. The intervention included education sessions conducted in Spanish, culturally relevant dietary recommendations, and group-based support. By incorporating cultural elements, participants were more engaged, leading to better health outcomes.

Another evidence-based recommendation for promoting health in Hispanics with diabetes is to address social determinants of health. Social determinants of health refer to socio-economic and environmental factors that influence health outcomes. Hispanics often face challenges related to education, income, and access to healthcare, which can affect their ability to manage diabetes effectively. A study by Arcury et al. (2017) highlighted the importance of addressing social determinants of health in diabetes management among rural Hispanics. The study found that participants who had better access to healthcare, transportation, and social support had improved diabetes control. Therefore, interventions targeting social determinants of health, such as providing access to affordable healthcare, transportation assistance, and enhancing social support networks, may help improve health outcomes among Hispanics with diabetes.

In conclusion, Hispanics with diabetes face higher rates of the disease and are at increased risk of complications. To address the unique needs of this population, evidence-based, primary care health promotion recommendations should be developed and implemented. Culturally tailored interventions that consider the language, beliefs, and traditions of Hispanics have shown promise in improving diabetes-related outcomes. Additionally, addressing social determinants of health, such as access to healthcare and social support, is crucial in promoting health among Hispanics with diabetes. By implementing these evidence-based recommendations, healthcare providers can effectively support Hispanics with diabetes in managing their condition and reducing the risk of complications.
