Introduction:

In the United States, African American nurses represent a significant portion of the healthcare workforce. They play a crucial role in providing culturally competent care and addressing the healthcare disparities that disproportionately affect African American patients. However, despite their valuable contributions, African American nurses face unique challenges within the healthcare system. One such challenge is the limited availability of mentorship opportunities tailored specifically to their needs. This paper will explore the importance of hospitals offering mentorship programs for African American nurses and the potential benefits it can bring to both the nurses and the healthcare system as a whole.

Problem Statement:

The underrepresentation of African American nurses in leadership positions is a well-documented issue within healthcare. Studies have consistently shown that African American nurses are less likely to hold managerial or executive roles compared to their white counterparts (Campbell-Heider et al., 2020; Ford & Hurd, 2018). This lack of representation not only hinders the career progression of African American nurses but also perpetuates the racial disparities that exist in healthcare outcomes. To address this problem, it is vital for hospitals to create mentorship programs specifically designed to support African American nurses in their professional development.

Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to explore the importance of mentorship programs for African American nurses and the potential impact they can have on the nursing workforce and healthcare outcomes. The objectives of this research include:

1. Investigating the current state of mentorship programs for African American nurses in hospitals.
2. Identifying barriers and challenges faced by African American nurses in accessing mentorship opportunities.
3. Examining the potential benefits of mentorship programs for African American nurses, including career advancement, professional growth, and improved patient outcomes.
4. Proposing recommendations for the development and implementation of effective mentorship programs tailored to African American nurses.

Clinical Question(s)/PICO:

PICO Question: Among African American nurses in hospital settings (Population), does the provision of mentorship programs (Intervention) compared to no mentorship programs (Comparison) lead to improved career advancement, increased job satisfaction, and better patient outcomes (Outcome)?

Research has shown that mentorship plays a pivotal role in career development and professional growth for nurses across different racial and ethnic backgrounds (Chan, 2016; Campbell-Heider et al., 2020). However, the unique experiences and challenges faced by African American nurses necessitate mentorship programs that are specifically tailored to their needs. These programs can provide crucial support, guidance, and access to resources that empower African American nurses to progress in their careers and contribute to reducing healthcare disparities.

By examining existing mentorship programs and assessing their effectiveness in supporting African American nurses, this research project aims to address the aforementioned problem of underrepresentation in leadership positions.
