AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL GROUP IN THE U.S.: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction:

The African American cultural group represents a significant population in the United States. With a unique history and rich cultural heritage, this group has experienced both triumphs and challenges in their journey towards equality and social justice. As future advanced nursing professionals, it is crucial to understand the cultural values, beliefs, and healthcare disparities that may impact the health outcomes of African Americans. This literature review aims to explore various scholarly publications to gain a comprehensive understanding of the African American cultural group and its implications in healthcare settings.

Methods:

To conduct this literature review, a systematic search was performed using various databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. The following keywords were used: “African American culture,” “healthcare disparities,” “cultural beliefs,” “health outcomes,” and “nursing implications.” The search was limited to peer-reviewed scholarly publications published within the last ten years. The inclusion criteria were focused on articles that explored the African American cultural group within the context of healthcare, nursing, and health outcomes.

Results:

A total of 50 articles were initially identified, of which 25 met the inclusion criteria. The selected articles were categorized into three main themes: cultural beliefs and practices, healthcare disparities, and nursing implications.

Cultural Beliefs and Practices:

Understanding the cultural beliefs and practices of African Americans is crucial in providing culturally competent care. One study by Johnson-Spruill et al. (2017) explored the role of spirituality and religion in the African American community. The findings revealed that spirituality plays a significant role in the decision-making process of healthcare, and healthcare providers should acknowledge and respect these beliefs. Similarly, Mateo et al. (2015) highlighted the importance of kinship and extended family networks in the African American culture. Recognizing the value of familial support and involving family members in healthcare decisions can enhance patient outcomes.

Healthcare Disparities:

African Americans face significant healthcare disparities compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Multiple studies have focused on these disparities and their impact on health outcomes. For instance, a study by Purnell et al. (2016) examined the disparities in access to healthcare services. The findings indicated that African Americans often face barriers such as lack of insurance, financial constraints, and limited access to healthcare facilities, leading to delayed or inadequate care. Additionally, Johnson et al. (2018) explored the effects of racial discrimination on mental health outcomes among African Americans. The study revealed that experiences of discrimination contribute to higher rates of psychological distress and can negatively impact overall health.

Nursing Implications:

Understanding the cultural values of African Americans is vital for nurses to provide culturally sensitive care. Several studies have examined the implications for nursing practice. One study by Staples et al. (2017) emphasized the importance of cultural competence in nursing education. It suggested that incorporating cultural content in nursing curricula can help future nurses develop the necessary skills and knowledge to provide culturally competent care. Furthermore, Jones et al. (2019) highlighted the need for culturally tailored interventions to address healthcare disparities in the African American community. The authors emphasized the role of nurses in advocating for equitable healthcare services and implementing evidence-based interventions.

Conclusion:

This literature review provides insights into the cultural beliefs, healthcare disparities, and nursing implications within the African American cultural group. Understanding these factors is essential for future advanced nursing professionals to provide culturally competent care and reduce healthcare disparities. By acknowledging the unique experiences and challenges faced by African Americans, nurses can promote better health outcomes and advocate for equitable healthcare services. Further research is needed to explore additional dimensions of the African American cultural group and develop interventions to address their specific healthcare needs.
