In his essay “Nuclear Weapons and the Othering of Others” published in the book “The Anthropology of Politics: A Reader in Ethnography, Theory, and Critique,” Hugh Gusterson explores the ways in which the development and use of nuclear weapons has been accompanied by a process of “othering” certain groups of people. Gusterson argues that nuclear weapons have not only been used as tools of destruction but also as a means of defining who belongs and who does not belong to a specific community or nation. He highlights how the narratives surrounding nuclear weapons often portray the “other” as inhuman, irrational, and dangerous, thereby justifying their exclusion and potential annihilation. By examining various case studies, Gusterson demonstrates how nuclear weapons have been used to perpetuate and reinforce existing power structures, particularly with regard to race, gender, and political ideology. Overall, Gusterson’s essay sheds light on the complex relationship between nuclear weapons, identity formation, and the marginalization of certain groups.
