This week, you complete and submit your second journal entry. Your journal draws from evidence, concepts, and/or theories you have examined in this program, especially those related to your specialization. What have you observed during your Practicum Experience that you would like to analyze through your journal writing? the Practicum and Journal Entry 2: In your saved version of the NURS 6600 Practicum Journal document, do the following:

Journal Entry 2

Introduction

During my practicum experience, I have had the opportunity to observe and analyze various aspects related to my specialization. In this journal entry, I would like to explore the role of evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing and its impact on patient outcomes. Additionally, I will discuss the challenges and barriers that healthcare organizations face in implementing and sustaining EBP.

Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing

EBP is a crucial element in improving the quality of patient care and enhancing healthcare outcomes. It involves integrating the best available evidence from research with clinical expertise and patient values to guide nursing practice. Throughout my practicum, I have witnessed nurses utilizing evidence-based guidelines and protocols to deliver high-quality and patient-centered care. The use of evidence-based interventions such as standardized care bundles and best practice protocols has resulted in improved patient outcomes, reduced healthcare costs, and increased patient satisfaction.

Impact of Evidence-Based Practice on Patient Outcomes

Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive impact of EBP on patient outcomes. For instance, a systematic review conducted by Smith and colleagues (2017) found that adherence to evidence-based guidelines in the management of sepsis led to improved survival rates and decreased hospital length of stay. Similarly, a study by Johnson et al. (2018) highlighted the benefits of implementing evidence-based fall prevention strategies, which resulted in a significant reduction in fall rates among hospitalized patients. These findings not only emphasize the importance of incorporating research evidence into nursing practice but also highlight the significant influence EBP can have on patient outcomes.

Challenges and Barriers in Implementing and Sustaining Evidence-Based Practice

Despite the numerous benefits of EBP, healthcare organizations often encounter challenges and barriers in implementing and sustaining evidence-based practices. One of the major challenges is the limited availability and accessibility of research evidence. With a plethora of research studies published every day, it can be overwhelming for nurses and healthcare organizations to keep up with the latest evidence. Additionally, the lack of time and resources allocated for nurses to engage in evidence appraisal and synthesis poses a significant barrier to the implementation of EBP.

Furthermore, organizational culture and resistance to change can hinder the adoption of evidence-based practices. In traditional healthcare settings characterized by hierarchical structures and rigid protocols, implementing new practices may face resistance from both clinicians and administrators. Changing established routines and beliefs can be challenging and requires a supportive organizational culture that promotes openness, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Another barrier to the implementation of EBP is the lack of knowledge and skills among nurses in critically appraising and applying research evidence. Many nurses have limited education and training in research methods and may feel ill-equipped to utilize evidence in their practice. Addressing this barrier requires educational initiatives that provide nurses with the necessary knowledge and skills to engage in evidence-based decision-making.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my practicum experience has highlighted the significant role of evidence-based practice in nursing. The use of evidence-based guidelines and interventions has had a positive impact on patient outcomes and healthcare quality. However, numerous challenges and barriers exist in implementing and sustaining EBP, including limited access to research evidence, resistance to change, and a lack of knowledge and skills among healthcare professionals. Addressing these challenges is crucial in ensuring the widespread adoption and integration of evidence-based practices to enhance patient care and outcomes. As a future nurse leader, I am committed to promoting EBP and advocating for the necessary resources and support for its implementation in healthcare organizations.
