Project Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this study is to examine the benefits of implementing regular repositioning of bedridden residents in order to prevent or reduce the incidence of bedsores over a 90-day period. Specifically, the study aims to analyze whether individuals who are repositioned every two hours experience a lower rate of bedsores compared to those who receive less frequent repositioning. By investigating this relationship, the study seeks to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on pressure ulcer prevention and provide evidence-based recommendations for improving the standard of care for bedridden individuals.

Background & Significance:
Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers, are a significant healthcare problem among bedridden patients. These wounds, resulting from prolonged pressure on the skin and underlying tissues, can range in severity from mild redness to deep, necrotic ulcers. Aside from causing considerable pain and discomfort to patients, bedsores can lead to serious complications, including infections, sepsis, and even death. Moreover, managing and treating bedsores adds to the healthcare burden, in terms of both cost and resources.

Preventing bedsores has been a longstanding goal for healthcare providers, as they are largely considered a preventable condition. Strategies such as regular repositioning, pressure-relieving support surfaces, and proper wound care have been recommended to reduce the incidence of bedsores. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding the optimal frequency of repositioning. While it is commonly believed that repositioning every two hours is effective in preventing bedsores, some studies suggest that less frequent repositioning may be equally efficacious.

The current state of knowledge regarding the frequency of repositioning and its impact on preventing bedsores is inconsistent and inconclusive. Existing studies have produced conflicting results, with some reporting a positive effect of more frequent repositioning and others finding no significant difference between different repositioning frequencies. Furthermore, the majority of studies in this area have focused on acute care settings, such as hospitals, and there is limited research specifically examining this issue in long-term care facilities or among the elderly population.

Therefore, this study aims to address the existing gaps in knowledge by specifically investigating the impact of repositioning frequency on bedsores in a long-term care setting. By examining the outcomes of bedridden residents who receive repositioning every two hours compared to those who receive less frequent repositioning, this study will contribute to the understanding of best practices for pressure ulcer prevention. The findings of this study could have implications for healthcare providers in long-term care facilities, enabling them to make evidence-based decisions regarding repositioning protocols and ultimately improve the quality of care provided to bedridden residents.
