Healthcare beliefs play a significant role in shaping the delivery of evidence-based healthcare. Understanding the healthcare beliefs of different heritages is crucial in providing culturally sensitive and appropriate care. In this essay, we will explore the health care beliefs of two heritages and examine whether there are any similarities between them. Additionally, we will discuss the impact of these beliefs on the delivery of evidence-based healthcare.

The two heritages we will focus on are the African American heritage and the Asian American heritage. These heritages have distinct cultural and healthcare beliefs that influence their attitudes towards health and healthcare practices.

In the African American heritage, there is often a strong emphasis on spirituality and the importance of faith in healing. Many African Americans believe in the power of prayer and the role of faith communities in promoting health and well-being. This spiritual perspective can sometimes conflict with evidence-based healthcare practices, especially in cases where medical interventions are necessary. For example, some African Americans have been known to seek spiritual interventions, such as faith healing, as an alternative to medical treatments.

Another important healthcare belief in the African American heritage is the concept of community. African Americans often value community support and seek advice and guidance from trusted individuals within their community. This can impact the delivery of evidence-based healthcare as individuals may rely more on community members’ opinions rather than scientific evidence. It is important for healthcare providers to engage with these community members and foster trust and understanding to effectively deliver evidence-based care.

In the Asian American heritage, there are various cultural and healthcare beliefs that shape their approach to health and healthcare. One common belief is the concept of balance and harmony. Asian Americans often adhere to traditional beliefs such as yin and yang or the concept of qi (life force energy). Imbalances in these energies are believed to lead to illness, and restoring balance is seen as crucial in achieving health. This belief in balance and harmony can sometimes lead Asian Americans to seek alternative therapies such as acupuncture or herbal medicine in combination with evidence-based treatments.

Ancestor worship and filial piety are also important healthcare beliefs in the Asian American heritage. Ancestor worship involves paying respect to deceased ancestors and seeking their guidance and blessings. This belief can influence healthcare decisions as individuals may consult with traditional healers or engage in rituals to honor their ancestors’ wishes. Filial piety, the duty of children to care for their parents, can also impact the delivery of evidence-based healthcare. Asian Americans may prioritize traditional beliefs and practices over evidence-based treatments to fulfill their responsibilities towards their parents.

Despite the differences in cultural and healthcare beliefs between the African American and Asian American heritages, there are also some similarities. Both heritages value the importance of family and community in health and healthcare decision-making. The support and advice of family and community members are sought after and considered vital in times of illness. Additionally, spirituality and a belief in higher powers play a significant role in both heritages’ approaches to health and healing.

The healthcare beliefs of these heritages have a direct impact on the delivery of evidence-based healthcare.
